Last spring, I had the exciting opportunity to join a faculty and staff cohort for BCEx, Broward College Entrepreneurial Experience training. The curriculum, designed to shape and strengthen entrepreneurial ideas, demonstrates such practical concepts as value creation, curious conversations, and the innovative mindset. My takeaway from the immersive experience evolved as a strong desire to blend social entrepreneurism with my Composition course theme – Social Sustainability.
From the BCEx curriculum, I now incorporate “MY WHY” videos, worksheets and exercises into my writing classes. So far, I’ve found that introducing ‘enterprise thinking’ to students opens new circles of learning – literally. As students complete the Venn diagram exercise to depict their purpose, they create and then present a vision of their “sweet spot” – their Purpose (the “why”) at the center of their passions, their career goals, and their dream pursuits.
Here, from a few of my ENC1102 students, are samples of their enterprising vision statements:
- In the next year, I aim to become a chairwoman of a 6.6 trillion-dollar market within my organization, Tradehouse Florida. Through investing and trading in the foreign exchange market, I find creative, impact-filed and tangible ways to fulfill the rest of my goals. I also express value creation through my online consignment store for vintage luxury goods. My business holds standards of genuine quality, integrity of authenticity, extraordinary customer satisfaction and nothing less. The gap between where I am and who I want to be is what keeps me going and why I put forth consistent effort. – Lindsey
- My goal is to own a children’s daycare center, where I can provide my future preschoolers with an educational environment that teaches them to care for the planet, others, and themselves. Nature and positivity are two values I plan on instituting. – Michelle
- What gets me out of bed every day is the chance of being better than I was yesterday. I am a value creator. A mentor taught me one rule: Proper prevention prevents poor performance. Long-term, I dream of becoming the first musical artist to blow up from my city; I want to Die a Legend. I’ve been producing original beats for my own songs; at 16, I got addicted to rapping. It’s my passion. I strive for success – no cap. – Maxson
- Every day I wake up brings another opportunity to spread positive energy. As a veteran, I draw from lessons I learned in the military about overcoming obstacles and persevering. Many skills have helped me develop the mindset that will steer me to accomplish any dream or dreams I may develop. After graduation, I plan to return to Jamaica to open my first business and pursue my filmmaking goals. – Travis
As BCEx continues to train Broward College students, faculty and staff, I see the emphasis on enterprise scholarship as a solid fit for the College’s eco-community. Infusing BCEx modular content into selected course curricula aligns with Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) across a range of disciplines. Indeed, the enterprising mindset offers “emotional, intellectual, social, creative, and practical skills” designed to propel students into action mode (Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Ed).
